How to plan a Huangshan mountain visit

Huangshan's south gate, cable car choices and summit loop explained, so you can plan a realistic one- or two-day mountain route.

Plan Your Route on Huangshan: Gates, Cable Cars and Summit Circuits

Most first-time visitors assume there is one way up Huangshan. They arrive at Tangkou, buy a ticket, and expect signs to point them to the summit. The mountain has three gates, two cable cars that serve completely different sides of the summit area, and a main loop that takes at least four hours to walk. Choose the wrong gate or the wrong lift and you add two hours of unnecessary climbing or backtrack to the wrong parking lot. The route you pick determines where you sleep, whether you catch dawn, and how much of your day is spent on granite steps rather than looking at them.

This page makes that choice clear. Decide three things before you buy any ticket: which gate you enter, which cable car you ride, and whether you walk the West Sea Grand Canyon loop or skip it. Your answer depends on where you are sleeping and how many days you have.

Three Gates, Two Cable Cars, One Decision That Matters

Huangshan has three official gates. The North Gate at Taiping and the East Gate at Tanshe are useful if you are coming from Taiping Lake or certain villages, but the vast majority of visitors arrive at the South Gate in Tangkou. The South Gate is the logical choice for a first visit because it gives you access to both lifts and both primary foot-climb routes. From Tangkou you ride a shuttle bus up the winding mountain road to the cable car lower stops. The bus costs about 19 CNY and runs from 06:30 to 17:30 in peak season.

The two lifts at the south entrance are not interchangeable. The Yungu Cable Car, also called Cloud Valley, deposits you near the Beihai Hotel area on the eastern side of the summit. From Yungu upper stop it is a 2.5- to 3-hour walk to Bright Summit, the central hub of the mountain. The Yuping Cable Car, sometimes called the Mercy Light Gate cable car, deposits you at the Jade Screen Pavilion on the southern side, right next to the Greeting Pine. From Yuping upper stop it is a 1.5- to 2-hour walk to Bright Summit via the Lotus Peak area.

If you only have one day, ride up one lift and down the other. That is the only way to see both the Greeting Pine and the West Sea Grand Canyon without doubling your walking time. Ride Yungu up and Yuping down: you approach from the east, walk west through the canyon, and exit south. Ride Yuping up and Yungu down: you do the reverse. Both work. Never take the same lift both ways unless you have a specific reason to revisit the same area.

What Changes With a Second Day

With two days you sleep on the summit. That changes the gate and lift equation entirely because you no longer need to loop back to your starting point. Enter through Yungu, walk to your hotel, store your bag, walk the West Sea Grand Canyon in the afternoon, and hike to Bright Summit for sunset. The next morning watch dawn at Refreshing Terrace or Bright Summit depending on where you stayed, then walk south to Jade Screen and ride the Yuping lift down. That route covers every major sight without backtracking and uses each cable car once.

The five summit hotels are Beihai Hotel, Xihai Hotel, Shilin Hotel, Baiyun Hotel and Yupinglou Hotel. Their positions on the route matter. Beihai Hotel sits near the Yungu upper stop and the eastern dawn viewpoint at Refreshing Terrace. Xihai Hotel sits on the western side near the West Sea Grand Canyon entrance and Danxia Peak, the recommended dawn spot for Xihai guests. Baiyun Hotel is close to the canyon loop. Yupinglou Hotel sits right at the Yuping lift upper stop next to the Greeting Pine. Book Beihai and you shorten your morning walk to dawn to about 10 minutes. Book Xihai and you add a 20-minute walk to Danxia Peak but you are already positioned for the canyon.

Booking matters. Summit hotel standard rooms in peak season run 1,200 to 2,500 CNY per night. Dormitory beds run 200 to 400 CNY. The booking window opens 30 days in advance and rooms sell out within hours, especially for weekends and holidays. Book the same day the window opens. Do not wait.

The West Sea Grand Canyon: the One Walk You Should Not Skip

The West Sea Grand Canyon loop takes 3 to 4 hours. It is the most rewarding single stretch on the mountain. The path drops you into a valley of vertical granite walls, then brings you back up to the ridge near Bright Summit. It is one way. You cannot reverse it. On a one-day trip you must start the loop by 13:00 at the latest to finish before the last lift leaves at around 17:00. If you are staying overnight you have the luxury of starting after lunch and taking your time.

The loop begins at the northern entrance near Xihai Hotel or the southern entrance near Baiyun Hotel. Most walkers start at the northern entrance and finish at Bright Summit. That puts you at 1,860 metres at the end, with the option to walk south toward the Greeting Pine or east toward Beihai. From Bright Summit to Jade Screen, where the Greeting Pine stands, takes 1.5 to 2 hours. From Bright Summit to Yungu upper stop takes 2.5 to 3 hours.

The High Summits and What You Can Actually See

Lotus Peak and Celestial Capital Peak are the two highest points on the main ridge, but they rotate on a 3- to 5-year cycle. Only one is open to hikers at a time. Check which is open before you plan your route; the closed one is roped off entirely. Lotus Peak reaches 1,864 metres. Celestial Capital reaches 1,810 metres. If Lotus Peak is open you can take a short detour from the Bright Summit to Jade Screen path. If Celestial Capital is open the detour is on the eastern side near the Yungu area.

Flying over Rock sits near Bright Summit on the western side. It is a large boulder balanced on a narrow pedestal and one of the few landmarks visible even in heavy cloud because it sits right beside the main path. The Greeting Pine at Jade Screen is also accessible in cloud. Do not count on seeing either view from a distance. Visibility on Huangshan drops below 50 metres on more than 250 days per year. The mountain is famous for cloud cover. You need to make peace with the possibility that you stand at Bright Summit and see only white. The consolation is that the cloud itself is the draw. When the wind shifts and a gap opens, that gap is the reason people return.

One Day Versus Two: What You Actually See

A one-day visit is tight but possible if you start early and skip the foot climb. Arrive at the Tangkou shuttle bus stop by 07:30. Ride to the Yungu lower stop, take the lift up, arrive at Beihai by 09:00. Walk to Bright Summit by 11:00. Start the West Sea Grand Canyon loop by 11:30. Finish at Bright Summit again by 15:00. Walk south to Jade Screen by 16:30, ride the Yuping lift down, catch the shuttle back to Tangkou by 17:30. That route covers the Greeting Pine, Bright Summit and the Grand Canyon. It does not include Lotus Peak or Celestial Capital Peak, and it does not include any sit-down meal on the summit. Bring a packed lunch.

A two-day visit adds dawn and eliminates the time pressure. Arrive on the mountain by 14:00, walk from Yungu to your hotel, drop your bag, walk the Grand Canyon loop in the late afternoon, watch sunset from Bright Summit or Danxia Peak. The next morning watch first light, walk to the Greeting Pine, ride down by 10:00. That schedule gives you two full hours on the summit that the day tripper does not have, and it lets you see the mountain in different weather conditions. The risk is summit cloud on both days. The reward is that if one morning is clear you saw it.

The Foot Climbs From the Base

The foot climbs from the base are a separate option for hikers who want a full day of ascent. The eastern steps from Yungu Valley to Beihai take 3 to 4 hours. The western steps from Mercy Light to Jade Screen take 3 to 4 hours. These are not shortcuts. They are steep, unshaded stone staircases that gain serious elevation. Carry at least two litres of water. Porters are available for luggage at roughly 10 to 20 CNY per kilogram, negotiated on site. Sedan chairs cost 200 to 400 CNY per segment, also negotiated. If you are not fit enough to climb several thousand steps, take the lift. There is no shame in it and you will have more energy for the summit walks.

Common Questions

Which gate should I use for a one-day visit?

The South Gate at Tangkou. It gives you access to both cable cars. Enter through Yungu and exit through Yuping, or the reverse.

Can I see the Greeting Pine and the West Sea Grand Canyon in one day?

Yes, if you ride one lift up and the other down. Start by 07:30 and skip the foot climbs. Bring a packed lunch.

How far ahead do I book a summit hotel?

The booking window opens 30 days in advance. Book the same day it opens. Summit hotels sell out within hours in peak season.

If I stay overnight, which cable car should I use?

Ride Yungu up on day one. Walk to your hotel. Ride Yuping down on day two after visiting the Greeting Pine. That covers the whole loop.

What does it cost to ride both cable cars?

In peak season, Yungu is 80 CNY one way and Yuping is 90 CNY one way. Add the entry fee of 190 CNY and the shuttle bus of 19 CNY. Budget about 400 CNY for mountain transport and entry per day.

Which dawn viewpoint should I pick?

If you stay at Beihai Hotel, walk to Refreshing Terrace. If you stay at Xihai Hotel, walk to Danxia Peak. If you stay somewhere else and want the eastern view, use Dawn Pavilion. For the western view, use Bright Summit.

What if I cannot walk the West Sea Grand Canyon?

Skip the canyon and walk the direct route from Yungu to Bright Summit to Jade Screen. That takes about 4 to 5 hours total and passes Flying over Rock and the Greeting Pine. You miss the canyon but see everything else.
