The cable car deposits you at 1,600 metres on a granite ridge. You watch the sunset, then walk to your hotel. That walk is the last easy thing you will do all night. A dormitory bunk on Huangshan costs between CNY 150 and CNY 400, and it is a steel-framed bunk in a shared room with hot water for four hours and no guarantee of silence. You pay that price because the porter who carried the mattress up the mountain did it on foot, and because sleeping anywhere else on the summit is illegal. The tradeoff is simple: you get the sunrise and the empty trails after the day-trippers leave. You also get a bed that costs twice what it should for half the comfort you expect.

That is the practical reality of accommodation in Anhui. The province rewards travellers who are willing to trade polish for access. Summit hotels on Huangshan are expensive and basic. Village guesthouses in Hongcun and Xidi are atmospheric and cramped. Tangkou hot spring hotels exist for one purpose: recovery after your legs give out. Once you accept what each type actually provides, the booking decisions become clear. Summit Hotels on Huangshan: the Only Legal Way to Sleep on the Mountain

Six properties sit on the summit of Huangshan: Beihai Hotel, Shilin Hotel, Xihai Hotel, Paiyunlou Hotel, Baiyun Hotel and Yupinglou Hotel. None of them are luxury. They are logistics operations powered by porters who carry every sheet, every bottle of water, every bag of rice up the stone steps. That porter labour, combined with cable car logistics, is the single biggest driver of price.

What You Actually Get for the Price

A dormitory bed is a bunk in a shared room. The price range runs from CNY 150 to CNY 400 per bed per night depending on the hotel and the season. Private rooms with an en suite bathroom range from CNY 800 to CNY 2,500 per room per night. Those are annual ranges, and the peak figures hit during the weeks around Chinese National Day and Labour Day. In April and October, expect to pay near the top of the band. In November or March, the lower end becomes possible.

Hot water is available in a daily window, usually 18:00 to 22:00, though the exact hours vary by hotel and season. You will not be able to shower outside those hours. The rooms are heated in winter and have basic bedding, but the construction is for function, not comfort. Corridors are narrow, soundproofing is minimal, and the shared dormitory experience includes snoring and early alarms.

How Far Ahead to Book

Summit rooms sell out weeks in advance. For travel in April, May, September or October, book four to six weeks ahead. For the first week of May or the first week of October, you are competing with domestic crowds that fill every bed on the mountain. If you try to book a week before those dates, you will find nothing. For low-season travel in November through February, two to three weeks ahead is sufficient. The only way to sleep on Huangshan legally is in one of these six hotels. Camping is not permitted anywhere on the summit.

What the Summit Hotels Are Not Good For

They are not good for travellers on a tight budget who need a private bathroom. They are not good for anyone who dislikes shared sleeping arrangements and balks at paying CNY 1,200 for a basic double room. They are not good for anyone who expects hot water at any hour. If you can tolerate the constraints, the payoff is genuine: you are on the mountain for sunrise, you skip the worst of the cable car queues, and you walk the West Sea Grand Canyon trail in the late afternoon when it is empty.

Tangkou Hot Spring Hotels and Village Guesthouses: Two Very Different Options Below the Summit

Most visitors to Huangshan base themselves in Tangkou, the town at the south entrance. The hotels here serve one function: post-hike recovery. Several properties offer hot spring pools fed by the same geothermal water that made the area famous. These are not luxury resorts in the style of Japan or Iceland. They are practical hotels with an on-site hot spring facility. Expect mid-range rooms, a dedicated towel service, and a pool temperature around 40 degrees Celsius. The price range for a standard double room in Tangkou is roughly CNY 300 to CNY 700 per night, depending on the season and whether the property includes hot spring access. The downside is location: Tangkou is a transit town. There is nothing to do here except eat, sleep and soak. You will not find evening entertainment or scenic walks within the town itself.

Hui-Style Courtyard Guesthouses: Atmosphere and Limitations

In the villages of Hongcun, Xidi, Chengkan, Tangmo, Nanping and Bishan, the dominant accommodation type is the converted Ming or Qing dynasty merchant house. These are inward-facing courtyard buildings arranged around a tianjing, or sky well, with carved wooden beams, grey brick walls and black tile roofs. The rooms are small and arranged around the courtyard. In renovated properties, bathrooms are often en suite, though the plumbing is older than in a modern hotel. The price range runs from CNY 200 to CNY 800 per room per night.

The atmosphere is the reason to book. Staying in a 300-year-old house with a lantern-lit courtyard is memorable. But the practical reality includes squat toilets in some budget properties, limited English at reception, and thin walls that carry courtyard noise. Hot water may be on a timer. Breakfast is a simple Chinese spread of rice porridge, pickled vegetables and steamed buns. Do not expect a continental breakfast or a shower at midnight.

The booking constraint is not availability, but registration. All hotels and guesthouses in China must register foreign guests with the local police at check-in, and your passport is required. Some very small village properties may not hold the license required to accept foreign guests. Confirm this before you book, not after. How to Match Accommodation to Your Itinerary

A single base does not work in Anhui. The distances between Huangshan, the villages and the airport are long, and public transport is slow. You can stay in Tunxi for its convenience to the airport and Old Street, but you then face a 1.5-hour bus each way to Hongcun and a 40-minute drive to the Huangshan south entrance. The correct move is to split your nights: one night in a Tangkou hotel before the climb, one night in a summit hotel to catch sunrise, and two nights in a village guesthouse to see Hongcun and Xidi without day-trip crowds. That logistics are worth the packing effort.

The common mistake is trying to compress Huangshan, Hongcun, Xidi and Jiuhua Shan into three days from a single base. Do not do that. The minimum viable trip is five days, and that assumes you move between locations. Arrive at Huangshan Tunxi International Airport, take the 15-minute taxi to Tunxi for about CNY 30-40, spend the first night there, and move to Tangkou the next morning. A visitor who has never used WeChat Pay or Alipay should arrive with cash in small notes, because Didi does not work in remote villages and you may need your guesthouse to call a local driver.

For guests who speak no Mandarin and are not comfortable with Chinese-only menus, Tunxi or a well-reviewed Hui-style guesthouse with English-speaking staff is the prudent choice. The villages are atmospheric, but the friction is real: squats, no toilet paper, limited signage. That is the tradeoff. Accept it or stay in Tunxi.
