Add 30 to 50 minutes to get from your Shanghai hotel to Hongqiao, and another 50 to 60 minutes from Huangshan North to the scenic area by bus. That lands at 4 to 5 hours total and CNY 250 to 400.

The Flight From Pudong

Shanghai Pudong to Huangshan Tunxi takes 1 hour 10 minutes in the air. But the real clock includes 45 to 70 minutes from central Shanghai to Pudong, plus 90 to 120 minutes of check-in and security. On arrival, the bus to the scenic area takes another 50 to 60 minutes. Total door to door: 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes. Total cost: CNY 500 to 1200. The train wins on both time and cost.

The Hefei Detour

Hefei Xinqiao International Airport sits roughly 320 km from Huangshan. A taxi or rental car from the airport to Hefei's main train station takes 60 to 90 minutes. From Hefei, the high-speed train to Huangshan North runs about 1 hour 20 minutes. Then add the same 50 to 60 minute bus from Huangshan North to the mountain. Total door to door from central Shanghai via Hefei: 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours, plus the wait for a connecting train. Cost is higher because you pay both the flight and a second train ticket. Consider Hefei only if you need a specific flight connection not available at Tunxi.

When the Train Is Not an Option

If you start from a Chinese city without a direct train to Huangshan North, such as Beijing, Guangzhou, or Shenzhen, flying into Tunxi is the better choice. Tunxi's domestic connections cover those cities daily. From Beijing, you would fly to Hefei and then take the train, adding time. From southern Chinese cities, the direct flight to Tunxi saves hours.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong

If the last high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Huangshan North leaves before your arrival, or if you miss it, your options are limited. No overnight trains run this route. You could take a late flight from Shanghai Pudong to Tunxi, but only if one of the 1 to 2 daily flights has seats. Otherwise, book a hotel near Hongqiao or Pudong and depart the next morning. Do not try to drive at night; the 320 km road from Shanghai to Huangshan passes through mountain sections with poor lighting.

When Flying Into Hefei or Tunxi Still Makes Sense

Choose Hefei for International Connections

Fly into Hefei Xinqiao if you are arriving from a city with no direct train or flight to Tunxi, such as many international hubs. Hefei handles more passenger volume than Tunxi and offers more international connections through the 72 hour visa-free transit policy for 54 nationalities. But you pay for that convenience: the onward journey to Huangshan adds 1 hour 20 minutes on the train from Hefei, plus airport transfer time.

Choose Tunxi for the Shortest Air Route

Fly into Tunxi if you are on a visa-free transit from Seoul, Taipei, or Hong Kong, since Tunxi offers a 72 hour visa-free transit within Anhui province only. You must hold a confirmed onward air ticket to a third country and apply at border inspection on arrival. No pre-application is needed. From Tunxi, a taxi to Tunxi Old Street costs CNY 30 to 40 and takes 15 to 20 minutes. The bus to the scenic area takes 50 to 60 minutes. This is the fastest air option for the mountain, but only if your schedule fits the 1 to 2 daily flights.

What You Sacrifice With Each Choice

Choosing the train from Shanghai means you arrive at Huangshan North, not in Tunxi city or the mountain base. You still need a 50 to 60 minute bus to the scenic area. Budget for that transfer. Choosing the flight to Tunxi means paying 2 to 4 times the train fare and being stuck if the flight is cancelled, which happens in bad weather, especially late June through July with heavy rain. Choosing Hefei means doubling your transit legs: airport to train station, then train to Huangshan North, then bus. That is three transfers before you touch the mountain.
