How to Reach Huangshan, Tunxi and the Villages Without a Tour

High-speed rail from Shanghai, Hangzhou or Nanjing to Huangshan North is the practical gateway, but villages and trailheads need buses or local cars.

How to Reach Anhui Without a Tour

You want to reach Huangshan, Tunxi and the ancient villages independently, without a tour bus. The distances are long and the public transport is slow. The practical approach is high speed rail to Huangshan North station, then a mix of buses and guesthouse arranged cars. This page gives you the specific times, costs and failure modes so you can plan without guessing.

The Rail Hub That Connects Everything: Huangshan North

High Speed Lines And Fares

Huangshan North station is the key rail hub for the mountains and villages. It is not in Tunxi. That is Huangshan City, 20 minutes away by taxi. It is not on the mountain itself. But every high speed line from Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing terminates here.

From Shanghai Hongqiao, the fastest trains run 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes. Second class costs between ¥190 and ¥230. From Hangzhou East, expect 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, fare ¥120 to ¥150. From Nanjing South, 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes, fare ¥170 to ¥210. Hefei, the provincial capital, connects in 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours at ¥140 to ¥170.

Booking And Backup Plans

Book 15 days ahead on the China Railway 12306 English site or Trip.com. You need your passport for booking and collection. During peak periods (Chinese New Year, May Day, Golden Week), trains sell out within 1 to 3 days of release. If that happens, your backup is a flight into Tunxi International Airport (TXN) or Hefei Xinqiao Airport (HFE), then a connecting train or bus.

Flying In: When to Choose Tunxi Over Hefei

Hefei Xinqiao International Airport is the main air entry point for the province, but it sits 2 hours from Huangshan North by rail. Use it only if you are also visiting Hefei itself or if flights to Tunxi are sold out. The airport bus to central Hefei takes about 1 hour and costs ¥25.

Tunxi International Airport (TXN) is closer to the mountains and villages. A taxi into Tunxi costs ¥30 to ¥40 and takes 15 to 20 minutes. The bus from Tunxi to Tangkou (the gateway town for Huangshan's south entrance) takes 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes. Flight time from Shanghai is 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 25 minutes; from Beijing, 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes; from Guangzhou, 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. If you are already in Shanghai, Hangzhou or Nanjing, the high speed train is faster and more practical than flying.

From Tunxi to the Villages: the Bus Network and Its Limits

Buses From Tunxi And The Rail Station

Tunxi is the most convenient base. It has the Old Street, good hotels and the bus station that connects to the villages.

From Tunxi, buses to Hongcun run every 30 to 60 minutes and take 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes, costing ¥30 to ¥35. To Xidi, the bus takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes at ¥25 to ¥30. From Huangshan North station, the bus to Hongcun takes 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes (¥30 to ¥35) and to Xidi takes 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes (¥25 to ¥30). Buses are cheap, reliable in daylight hours, and accept cash in small notes.

The Taxi Gap Between The Two Villages

The failure case: Hongcun and Xidi are only 10 to 12 km apart. A taxi between them takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs ¥30 to ¥40. Do not rely on Didi in these villages. Didi availability in Hongcun and Xidi is limited. In Tunxi and Tangkou, Didi works fine. In remote villages, you need your guesthouse to call a local driver. Ask at check-in and negotiate a price for the next day's transfers.

Getting to the Mountain Itself

From Tunxi, the bus to Tangkou (the south entrance gateway) takes 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes and costs ¥20 to ¥25. From Tangkou, two shuttle buses run to the cable car lower stations: Yungu Temple (20 to 30 minutes, ¥19) and Mercy Light Temple (20 to 30 minutes, ¥19). You cannot walk from Tangkou to the cable car stations; the shuttle is mandatory.

Advance booking is required for hotels on the summit. They are expensive and sell out weeks ahead during peak season. Sleeping on the mountain is not allowed outside designated hotels. If you cannot get a summit room, your options are a day hike starting at 07:00 (cable cars open around 06:30) or staying in Tangkou and entering early.

What the Other Gateways Offer (and When to Skip Them)

Day Trips From Tunxi

Shexian (county town, gateway to ancient villages including Huizhou Ancient City) is 40 minutes from Tunxi by bus or car. The Huizhou Ancient City is a walled old town worth a half day. Chengkan and Tangyue Memorial Archways are a half day loop from Tunxi, 40 to 60 minutes by car. Qiyun Shan, a quieter Taoist mountain, is 40 minutes from Tunxi by car or bus. Taiping Lake, 1 hour from Tangkou by car, is good for boat trips on a non hiking day.

Jiuhua Shan And Wuhu

Jiuhua Shan, one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, is 2 to 2.5 hours from Hefei or Wuhu by high speed rail plus bus. It is a separate trip, not an add on to a Huangshan focused itinerary. Wuhu itself has lighter tourism draws. If you have only 5 days, skip it.

The Critical Failure You Must Avoid

The Three Day Trap

The single thing that most often goes wrong here: visitors try to see Huangshan, Hongcun, Xidi and Jiuhua Shan in three days from a single base in Tunxi. They underestimate that a 'day' between the mountain and the villages involves 3 to 4 hours on the road, plus cable car queues and walking time. The mountain itself demands a full day (or two if you want sunrise). Each village needs at least 2 hours. Buses stop running by early evening in rural areas. If your guesthouse cannot arrange a car, you are stuck.

A Five Day Itinerary That Works

Plan for 5 days minimum. Day 1: arrive at Huangshan North station, bus to Tunxi, settle in. Day 2: full day on Huangshan (cable car up, hike the summit loop, cable car down, stay in Tangkou or return to Tunxi). Day 3: bus to one village (Hongcun or Xidi), overnight there. Day 4: second village and return to Tunxi. Day 5: depart. That schedule works without panic.

Common Questions

Can I use Didi to get from Hongcun to Xidi?

Unreliable. Didi availability in Hongcun and Xidi is limited. Instead, ask your guesthouse to call a local driver. A taxi between the two villages takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs ¥30 to ¥40.

Do I need to book Huangshan summit hotels in advance?

Yes. Advance booking is required. They sell out weeks ahead in April May and September October. Book as soon as your travel dates are firm. No sleeping on the mountain outside hotels.

What if high speed rail tickets are sold out for Huangshan North?

Fly to Tunxi International Airport (TXN) or Hefei Xinqiao Airport (HFE). From Hefei, take the rail to Huangshan North (1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours). Alternatively, try buying tickets at the station counter 15 days out, or use Trip.com for last minute cancellations.

Is English signage enough for bus routes?

No. English is limited outside Tunxi and the main scenic area. Bus signs and menus are often Chinese only. Save a photo of your destination in Chinese characters on your phone. Carry small cash notes for bus fares.
